Grant County initially was very dependent on forestry for it's economy but has experienced some growth in recreational activities (including hunting) and tourism, as well as cottage industry. As times have changed, some residents have struggled to develop new productive industries and to diversify their economy. A significant percentage of the county’s workforce is employed by some level of government or public services. This can be attributed to the nearly 60% of land which is federal, mostly national forest land. In 2000, its population was about 8,000 residents.The seat of the county is Canyon City. Other incorporated communities are: Dayville, Granite, John Day, Long Creek, Monument, Mount Vernon, Prairie City, and Seneca.
