Building Process Video 9: Vapor Barrier and SandWe continue our preslab preparations by adding a 6 mil vapor barrier with 2 inches of clean sand over our Type II underlayment. This is an additional step to typical underslab preparations. In past residential projects I have worked on, the 6 inch underlayment of Type II material or gravel was sufficient. I would venture to say, based on my experience, that Type II or gravel is preferrable. As you will see in the construction video, sand can be difficult to work with because it does not compact as well as other material. However, we MUST build to the approved blueprints. The architect called for sand and the building department agreed. While ease of installation is attractive to the contractor;the architect, engineers and city officials put their reputations behind approvals. If a component of construction would ever fail or reveal itself as substandard, the contractor's protection and the owner builder's protection is in having followed the approved working drawings and engineering.
