Building Process Video Series: Part 5

The fifth step in the building process is the initial setting of forms. The concrete contractor sets form boards or "concrete forms" to control the placement of concrete and establish the finished floor height. Prior measurements taken by the surveyors, layout crews and excavators are double checked and referenced against the plans. The concrete foreman monitors all work and meticulously follows up behind his workers. Stringline is run at finished floor height and a laser level is used to make certain all form boards are set correctly. A successful construction project depends heavily on a well laid foundation. Properly set forms are a critical step in establishing a good foundation.

Las Vegas Project

We will be continuing our Building Process Video Series for the next 12 months. The typical residential project takes 4-6 months, however, our Las Vegas Project is a 10,000 square foot custom home. While it may not be exactly what most owner builders are undertaking, it will demonstrate the building process that is common to all projects.

Remember, these videos are brief and fairly general. They are meant to familiarize owner builders with the building process. There is a lot of additional education and experience that an owner builder should seek out before undertaking their own project. As they say, knowledge is power.

The ultimate goal is to show owner builders that a complicated, enormous custom home is built the in same way, using the same subcontractors, steps and materials, as the smaller, "simpler" projects that most of us undertake. Of course, there will be unique challenges that may not apply to an individual's owner builder experience. They will, however, hopefully address another's issues.

I hope the videos are enjoyable and informative. I am still learning how to shoot and edit video. As time goes on, I will probably go back and re-edit some of the videos I have already done.
